Dear Parent/Guardian:
All students in HPE 10 complete a Virginia-approved driver education program that is required for Virginia residents under 18 years old to get a driver’s license. A new requirement this year is for students under 18 to attend an additional 90-minute parent/teen component in addition to the in-classroom portion of the driver education curriculum. All current 10th-grade students who completed Driver Ed in Semester I HPE 10 AND who are currently taking Driver Ed in Semester II HPE 10 must complete an additional 90-minute parent/teen component in person before the Certificate of Completion for Classroom Driver Education (“Green Card”) can be issued by the school.
While student participation in the parent/student driver education component is mandatory, the participation of the student's parent/guardian is encouraged but not required.
MCPS Driver Education teachers provided an MCPS Driver Education Parent/Teen Night for the entire division on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at 6:30 PM for all MCPS students and their parents/guardians that met all requirements of the 90-minute parent/teen component. However, the requirements for students and parents/guardians were unclear at that time.
What if my child attended the MCPS Driver Education Parent/Teen Night in November?
Student and parent/guardian attendance was documented that evening, and those students can be issued their “Green Card” by the school now. If a student attended without a parent/guardian, a completed Parent-Guardian Opt Out Form must be returned to the main office or email a scanned copy to [email protected] before the “Green Card” can be issued by the school.
What if my child did not attend the MCPS Driver Education Parent/Teen Night in November, or my child is currently taking Driver Ed?
In order to ensure that all current 10th-grade students have the opportunity to attend the additional 90-minute parent/teen component, Driver Education teachers at each high school will be repeating this presentation during school hours on Thursday, January 26, 2023. An assembly will be held for all 10th-grade students who need to complete the additional 90-minute parent/teen component, starting at 12:45 pm (at the beginning of Bruin Block). Parents/guardians are invited and encouraged to attend. Any parent or guardian who is unable to attend MUST complete the Parent-Guardian Opt Out Form and return it to the main office or email a scanned copy to [email protected] before the “Green Card” can be issued by the school.
